The English Curriculum in St. Laurence`s

There has always been a strong emphasis on the development of English in St. Laurence`s. As well as following the required curriculum there are a number of extra activities that take place throughout the year.

  • Every October we host a Book Fair, this gives both the children and the parents an opportunity to buy suitable books and at the same time provides an excellent fund raising resource for the school.
  • During the Book Fair visiting authors come and provide readings & activities for the children.
  • Niall De Burca , a well known story teller also visits the school and entertains and captivates all classes from Junior Infants to Sixth with his gifted delivery of both Irish and International stories.
  • Throughout the year classes participate in “The Write a Book” competition organised by the Blackrock Teachers Centre. This competition encourages all children to use whatever genre they are comfortable with to write a story and enter a nationwide competition.
  • There is usually a wealth of stories, and poetry on display to be enjoyed around the school. Well worth a look.
  • We also encourage local residents to share their experiences of their work / hobbies / experiences. We have had many enjoyable talks and demonstrations in the past.
