St. Laurence's National School

Our school is very lucky to be taking part in the Modern Languages in Primary Schools initiative. This means that 5th and 6th class get one and a half hours of Spanish language and cultural education per week. We also have a spanish language assistant for our school. She is very busy teaching spanish songs and promoting the Spanish language and culture throughout our school.

LA NAVIDAD

Every classroom in the school knows the Spanish version of Jingle Bells called El Trineo. Junior Infants up to 1 Class know the chorus and second class to fourth class, know the whole song. The children have enjoyed singing this song, because they already knew the tune. The lyrics, however, are not a literal translation from the English version.

Fifth and sixth classes have also learned “ El Trineo” (Jingle Bells). But since they have Spanish lessons twice a week, the have also learned two other Spanish Christmas songs called Campana sobre Campana, and a verse and chorus of Noche de Paz (Silent Night). Noche de Paz was sung as the Carol Service on the 18 of December.
